Congratulations to our local backcountry ski shop, Cripple Creek Backcountry. Last night we attended their opening party. They are entering their third season with guns blazing.
The shop is bigger and it’s filling fast with skis, splitboards, and even mini skirts.
Skirts may look silly in a hard core ski shop but they are actually a handy layering piece. Some racers, both women and men, wear them over their speed suits during warmup. A full side zip makes it easy to whip off quickly. I especially like the added layer of insulation on dawn patrol days when I sit on the cold smoke seat of our old pickup. I wear it over my ski pants and zip it off before I start skinning.
The gathering at Cripple Creek Backcountry worked better than the
sacrifice of the skis. The camaraderie of the hopeful got the flakes to start falling. After a beautiful sunny fall, it’s snowing in the mountains. It looks like this storm will pass in a day or two with clear skies at the end of the week.
Perhaps Ullr is waiting for the hot tub fest at WildSnow Field HQ to herald in the big storms.
