Our 16-year-old son had the opportunity to attend a Wilderness Medicine Institute 2 day first aid class this past weekend. Located at the 10th Mountain Harry Gates Hut in central Colorado, the intensive covered just about everything in advanced first aid, with plenty of hands-on practice. I was there doing photography the second afternoon, and was highly impressed with the professional instructors and excellent content. As we’re always harping on here, you can buy all the avalanche rescue gear in the world but without first aid training you’re only half way to saving someone’s life. Tenth Mountain puts on numerous avalanche safety and first aid courses , all held in the realistic and inspiring environs of their backcountry huts. Contact 10th Mountain for details.
Much better location than a conference room or school auditorium! |
Wilderness Medicine Institute teaching style includes a huge amount of hands-on practice, making it much different than self study. They also teach the latest best-practice based on current medical studies — info you won’t find in that old first aid manual that’s been kicking around your bookshelf for the last six years. |
