Backcountry snow conditions may not be ultimate right now in the Austrian alps, but ski tourers get after it anyhow. To stay in shape, uphilling after work is a huge trend. We joined Werner Koch of Contour Skins for a jaunt up Mutterer Alm. Under a rising full moon, we skinned about 1500m to their slopeside restaurant.
Ski resorts around Innsbruck work together to accommodate the tsunami of evening skiers. Austrian law allows everyone access to terrain so theoretically, you can uphill anytime. Mountain restaurants manage crowds by alternating the nights they are open. Mutterer Alm is open on Wednesday evening and an average of 1,800 uphillers drop in for dinner. Our evening meal was incredibly delicious, served fast and the dessert, mouthwateringly memorable.
