This weekend my friend Skyler and I took a trip up to Winchester Fire Lookout, an historic fire lookout north of Mt. Baker highway on top of Winchester mountain up here in Washington State (see map below). I hadn’t gotten to go skiing in a few weeks and I was itching to get out, even if the conditions looked a little iffy due to warm weather and tons of new, unconsolidated snow (and I don’t mean powder).

Cascade mountains backcountry skiing. Stevens Pass received over 13 inches of rainfall on January 6th and 7th. A Youtube video showed some guys at Alpental on Snoqualmie Pass riding tubes in the flowing water of the Alpental Road, between the snowbanks. Across I-90 an avalanche of the entire snowpack and landslide on a ski run at Hyak removed lift towers and a home, with the homeowner inside drinking coffee according to a forum posting.
