Totally Deep Podcast 81 — CAIC Director Ethan Greene

by Manasseh Franklin December 9, 2020
written by Manasseh Franklin December 9, 2020

Just another day on the job for CAIC Director Ethan Greene.

Just another day on the job for CAIC Director Ethan Greene.

Dr. Ethan Greene of CAIC lays down the knowledge

Just in time for Colorado’s inaugural Backcountry Safety Awareness Week, here are some nuggets of safety gold from Colorado Avalanche Information Center Director Ethan Greene. Greene has been working with the CAIC since 2005 and has witnessed backcountry use and interest surge across the state during that time.

In the episode, he and Totally Deep co-host Randy Young dig into avalanche records and related death rates; how the organization uses the funds that Friends of CAIC gathers from fundraisers, events and memberships; and the benefits of morning versus afternoon issued forecasts.

Greene is a Colorado native currently stationed in Leadville. A true science devotee, he has a PhD in Geosciences, a masters in Atmospheric Science and a bachelors in Meteorology. He’s also an avalanche instructor and a member of the American Avalanche Association.

Oh, and for a bonus, Doug and I head up the episode intro. We talk about the phenomenon of skiing whale butter that has characterized Colorado’s dry early season, as well as some exciting things going on lately on WildSnow. Tune on in.
